Tourists allowed retaining motor vehicles without duty, taxes for six months

ISLAMABAD: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has introduced a major relief for tourists visiting Pakistan by allowing them to bring their vehicles into the country without paying any customs duty or taxes, and retain them for a longer period. As per the new regulations, tourists can now keep their vehicles in Pakistan for up to six months, doubling the previous limit of three months.

This decision was officially announced through SRO 495(I)/2021, issued on Thursday, which amends the Customs Rules, 2001. The extension of the retention period aims to facilitate international tourists who wish to explore Pakistan by road, especially those arriving from neighboring countries or through land routes with their personal vehicles.

The updated notification also revises the definition of a tourist. Under the amended rule, a tourist is defined as: “a person not normally resident in Pakistan, who enters into Pakistan for a stay of not more than six months in the course of any twelve months period for legitimate non-immigrant purposes.” This expanded definition aligns Pakistan’s policy with global standards, making it more attractive for international tourists traveling overland.

The revised regulation is expected to encourage road tourism, particularly among adventurers and overland travelers who prefer bringing their own vehicles to enjoy the scenic routes and diverse landscapes of Pakistan. From the Karakoram Highway to the coastal belt of Balochistan, Pakistan offers vast potential for road trips, and this policy change removes a significant barrier for tourists.

The FBR’s initiative is part of a broader effort to boost tourism, promote a positive image of the country, and support local economies that benefit from increased tourist activity. With extended time and fewer restrictions on personal vehicles, tourists will be more inclined to explore remote regions, stay longer, and contribute more to the local economy.

This pro-tourism measure demonstrates Pakistan’s commitment to welcoming international travelers and making their road journeys smoother and more flexible.
