Toy Story 5 Dominates Box Office as Supergirl Opens Second

Entertainment

Disney and Pixar’s Toy Story 5 continued its strong run at the box office, holding on to the top position for a second consecutive weekend while DC Studios’ Supergirl debuted in second place.

The latest installment of the beloved animated franchise is projected to earn up to $80 million during its second weekend in North American cinemas, pushing its domestic total close to $300 million, according to industry estimates reported by Variety.

The film has already established itself as one of the biggest releases of the year. Its opening weekend generated $160 million domestically, marking the largest debut of 2026 and setting a new benchmark for animated films released this year.

Meanwhile, Supergirl opened with $18 million on Friday from 3,602 theatres across North America. The superhero film is expected to finish its opening weekend with approximately $59 million in ticket sales.

Although the debut represents a solid start for the DC Comics adaptation, it falls well short of the performance delivered by Superman, which launched with more than $120 million during its opening weekend.

Supergirl, starring Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, was produced on a reported budget of $170 million and marks another key entry in DC Studios’ evolving cinematic universe.

The film’s ending has already sparked discussion among fans. In the climactic scene, Kara prevents Ruthye from taking revenge on the villain Krem of Yellow Hills, who was responsible for the murder of Ruthye’s parents.

Speaking about the finale, Alcock explained that Kara’s actions were motivated by a desire to protect Ruthye from further emotional trauma and to teach her that pain cannot be healed through violence or self-destruction.

According to the actress, Kara’s decision reflects the character’s own struggles with grief and suffering, while reinforcing the film’s broader themes of forgiveness and personal growth.

With Toy Story 5 continuing to attract family audiences and Supergirl drawing comic book fans, both films are expected to remain major attractions at the global box office in the coming weeks.
