Toyota Halts Diesel Engine Shipments Due to Irregularities

Toyota Industries Corporation (TICO), the entity entrusted by Toyota Motor Corporation (Toyota) to develop diesel engines, has reported irregularities in the domestic emissions certification of engines for forklifts and construction machinery. The findings were disclosed by a special investigation committee led by Mr. Hiroshi Inoue.

An independent investigation, initiated at Toyota’s request, revealed discrepancies in testing the horsepower output for three diesel engines—1GD, 2GD, and F33A. These engines are integral components of various Toyota models, including the Hilux pickup, Fortuner SUV, Innova minivan, Land Cruiser (LC300), and the upscale Lexus LX in the 500d specification.

The investigation exposed irregularities during horsepower output testing, where ECUs with differing software were used, skewing results to present smoother values with less variation. While there are ten globally affected vehicle models, including six in Japan, a thorough verification of mass-produced products confirmed that the engines and vehicles adhere to performance output standards.

In response, TICO and Toyota have decided to temporarily halt shipments of the affected engines and vehicles. Despite this, users can continue using the impacted engines and vehicles without concerns about safety or performance. The companies express deep regret for any inconvenience caused to customers and stakeholders.

Moving forward, both TICO and Toyota pledge to provide detailed explanations to authorities and take appropriate measures, including witness-attended testing. Certification irregularities are viewed seriously, and the companies emphasize their commitment to the integrity of the certification process.

TICO acknowledges the need for a comprehensive overhaul of its business, including changes in management mindset and corporate culture. Toyota, as the responsible party for the diesel engine business, commits to supporting TICO’s revitalization efforts.

While expressing regret for oversight in test procedures, Toyota vows to actively participate in company-wide activities to assist in TICO’s rebuilding process, ensuring safety and quality remain top priorities.
