Toyota Unveils GR H2 Racing Concept: Hydrogen-Powered Prototype

Toyota Motor Corporation’s Chairman, Akio Toyoda, made a groundbreaking announcement at the press conference held by the Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO) at Circuit de la Sarthe in France. The press conference marked the first public reveal of Toyota’s hydrogen engine vehicle prototype called “GR H2 Racing Concept.”

This unveiling was prompted by the ACO’s recent decision to include hydrogen-engine vehicles, alongside fuel cell electric vehicles, in the hydrogen category of the renowned Le Mans 24 Hours endurance race.

The GR H2 Racing Concept is equipped with a hybrid system and a powerful hydrogen engine. In terms of dimensions, it measures 5,100 mm in length and 2,050 mm in width.

During his speech at the press conference, Toyoda congratulated the ACO on the centenary of the Le Mans race and expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to showcase Toyota’s advancements in automotive technology through this prestigious event.

He stated that, Le Mans is not only a place where we compete in one of the world’s most celebrated races but also where we can push the boundaries of technology and realize the future. Toyoda emphasized that Toyota aims to achieve carbon neutrality in motorsports without compromising performance or excitement.

The GR H2 Racing Concept represents Toyota’s vision for the future of race cars. It combines impressive performance features such as sound, torque, and dynamics with zero emissions, redefining the concept of racing.

Toyoda expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming Le Mans H2 class and the prospect of introducing the new GR H2 race car.

ACO President Pierre Fillon hailed the press conference as a historic moment for the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the FIA World Endurance Championship. He commended Toyota, the world’s leading manufacturer, for presenting their Hydrogen Endurance project, emphasizing the role of Le Mans as a technological laboratory for developing cars.

Fillon emphasized the importance of sustainable technologies and the ACO’s commitment to the energy transition by promoting hydrogen as a safe and efficient energy carrier through initiatives like MissionH24 and GreenGT.
