Ufone faces service disruptions amid electricity load-shedding across Pakistan

Telecom operator Ufone said on Thursday that customers across Pakistan may experience temporary service disruptions due to ongoing nationwide electricity load-shedding affecting network operations.

In a statement, the company said frequent and prolonged power outages, in some cases lasting up to eight hours or more, were impacting its ability to maintain uninterrupted mobile services.

Ufone explained that its cellular infrastructure depends on backup battery systems installed at base stations to ensure continuity during power failures. However, these systems require at least three to four hours of uninterrupted electricity supply to fully recharge.

The current cycle of repeated outages is preventing batteries from reaching full charge, reducing backup capacity and increasing the risk of intermittent service interruptions, the company said.

“As a result of the ongoing load-shedding pattern, some customers may experience temporary degradation or disruption in mobile services,” the statement added.

Ufone said services are expected to normalise once electricity supply stabilises and grid reliability improves. The company urged customers to remain patient while efforts are made to minimise service impact.

The telecom operator said it was actively managing its network to reduce disruption and ensure connectivity where possible, despite constraints posed by the energy situation.

Pakistan has been facing increased power shortages in recent weeks due to fuel supply constraints and fluctuating hydropower generation, leading to extended outages in several urban and rural areas.

Telecom operators, which depend heavily on continuous electricity supply to power thousands of cell sites nationwide, are among the sectors most affected by prolonged load-shedding.

Industry officials have warned that sustained power instability could continue to affect mobile and internet services unless grid reliability improves or backup infrastructure capacity is strengthened.
