The veteran batter smashed his 55th ODI century as India secured a dominant eight-wicket victory in Thiruvananthapuram.
Virat Kohli produced a spectacular batting display as India defeated West Indies by eight wickets in the opening ODI of the three-match series at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram.
The veteran batter struck an unbeaten 139 from just 88 deliveries, registering his 55th ODI century and helping India chase down the target with authority. His innings included nine sixes as he maintained an aggressive approach while ensuring that responsibility remained central to his batting.
Kohli explained after the match that he is challenging himself to discover another level of performance at this stage of his career. He said the aim is to play at a higher intensity while maintaining control and avoiding unnecessary risks.
The former India captain also revealed that finding this new approach has given him greater freedom at the crease. According to Kohli, the mindset could benefit him across formats, including international cricket and the Indian Premier League.
His latest century also added another landmark to an already remarkable ODI career. Kohli recently became only the second batter after Sachin Tendulkar to surpass 15,000 runs in ODI cricket. However, he stressed that individual records have never been his primary motivation.
Instead, Kohli said his priority remains assessing the match situation and completing his responsibilities for the team. He credited consistency, hard work and gratitude for helping him continue performing at the highest level.
The 37-year-old also linked his attacking batting philosophy to physical fitness. He explained that maintaining a strong body helps him keep his mind clear and visualize how he wants to approach different situations during an innings.
Kohli further reflected on his long international career, saying that representing India before large home crowds remains something he deeply values. His comments highlighted his desire to continue contributing while enjoying every opportunity to play for the national side.
India also benefited from Shubman Gill’s century, while spinner Kuldeep Yadav claimed four wickets to complete a comprehensive team performance.
With Kohli having indicated that the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup will be his final World Cup for India, his current form could prove significant as the team builds towards the tournament. India reached the final in 2023 and will now look to improve on that campaign.
