West Indies Name Two New Batsmen for India Test

The West Indies cricket team has unveiled their lineup of 13 players for the crucial first Test against India, which marks the commencement of their pursuit in the ICC World Test Championship.

The highly anticipated match will take place at Windsor Park in Dominica on July 12, followed by the second Test at Queen’s Park Oval in Trinidad, starting on July 20.

Notably, the squad incorporates two uncapped batters and a skilled spinner, potentially making his first appearance in almost two years.

One of the new additions to the squad is left-handed batter Kirk McKenzie, whose impressive performances for West Indies ‘A’ during their recent series against Bangladesh ‘A’ have earned him a well-deserved call-up.

Another left-hander, Alick Athanaze, is also in line to make his Test debut after securing a spot in the squad.

The inclusion of Rahkeem Cornwall, a tall off-spinner, came as a surprise, adding an intriguing dynamic to the team. Should he be chosen for the final XI, it would mark his 10th Test and his first appearance since November 2021.

Cornwall’s selection stems from the unavailability of their primary spinner, Gudakesh Motie, due to an injury. Additionally, left-arm tweaker Jomel Warrican has been included in the squad and stands a chance to face India.

Unfortunately, due to injuries, the West Indies have decided not to include promising fast bowler Jayden Seales and experienced all-rounder Kyle Mayers in the squad. Leading the team as captain will be opening batter Kraigg Brathwaite.

Desmond Haynes, the chief selector, expressed his confidence in the abilities of the newcomers and expects them to excel against the formidable Indian team.

While the West Indies missed out on qualifying for this year’s World Cup, Haynes emphasized the significance of leaving that disappointment behind and focusing on a strong start in the new World Test Championship cycle.
