WhatsApp tests green dot online status indicator on iPhone

WhatsApp has expanded testing of its new green dot online status indicator to iPhone users, bringing the feature to iOS after it was first spotted in Android beta versions last month.

According to WABetaInfo, the feature is available in WhatsApp beta version 26.26.10.72 for iOS and is currently being rolled out to a limited number of beta testers.

The update introduces a small green dot displayed at the bottom-right corner of a contact’s profile photo in the Contact Info screen whenever that person is online.

The indicator updates in real time, disappearing automatically once the contact is no longer active on WhatsApp.

At present, the green dot only appears on the Contact Info page, which users can access by tapping a contact’s profile picture. The feature is not yet available in the main chats list or the Chats tab.

WhatsApp has also applied the same privacy settings used for its existing “Last Seen” and online status features. Users who choose to hide their online status from others will not display the green dot, ensuring the new indicator respects existing privacy preferences.

The feature is currently limited to selected beta users on both Android and iOS, with no official timeline for a wider public rollout.

The new online status indicator is part of WhatsApp’s ongoing efforts to improve user experience by making it easier to identify active contacts while maintaining the platform’s privacy controls.

Meta-owned WhatsApp regularly introduces new features through its beta programme before making them available to its global user base, which exceeds three billion monthly active users.
