WhatsApp is developing additional phone number privacy controls for users with usernames, allowing them to decide who can see their contact details in chats and calls.
WhatsApp is reportedly working on a new privacy feature that will give users greater control over who can view their phone numbers during conversations and calls. The upcoming option is expected to complement the platform’s recently introduced Username feature, which aims to reduce the need for sharing personal phone numbers.
According to a report by WABetaInfo, the new functionality has been spotted in WhatsApp beta version 2.26.45.1 for Android. The feature is currently under development and is designed to provide users with more detailed control over their phone number visibility.
The proposed privacy setting will include four options: Everyone, My Contacts, My Contacts Except…, and Nobody. These choices will allow users to determine which people can access their phone numbers when communicating through WhatsApp.
The development follows WhatsApp’s introduction of usernames in June. Although the feature has not yet been made available to everyone, users have started receiving the option to reserve their preferred usernames.
The username system is designed to improve privacy by allowing people to connect without exchanging their mobile numbers. Instead, users can find and contact each other through their selected usernames.
How WhatsApp’s New Phone Number Privacy Setting Will Work
Under the reported system, the default phone number visibility setting will be Nobody. This means users who prefer keeping their contact details private will not need to manually adjust their settings.
However, those who use WhatsApp for professional communication, businesses or other purposes will be able to select different visibility options according to their preferences.
There is one important limitation to the upcoming feature. Users will only be able to access these additional privacy controls if they have a WhatsApp username.
Furthermore, the new setting will not hide a phone number from someone who already knows it. Such contacts will continue to see the number in existing chats and calls, even after the privacy controls are introduced.
When Will WhatsApp Release the Feature?
WhatsApp’s enhanced phone number privacy controls are still being developed. Even beta testers currently cannot access the functionality, suggesting that it has not yet reached the public testing stage.
The feature is expected to become available through a future beta update before a wider rollout. However, WhatsApp has not announced an official release date.
If introduced, the update could provide an additional layer of privacy for users who want to communicate through usernames without routinely exposing their personal phone numbers.
