Experienced left-back Yuri Berchiche commits to another season with Athletic Bilbao after lengthy contract negotiations.

Athletic Bilbao have secured the services of experienced left-back Yuri Berchiche for another season after the veteran defender agreed to a one-year contract extension. The new deal ensures that the 36-year-old will continue his long association with the Basque club into the 2026-27 campaign.

Berchiche’s extension comes after weeks of negotiations between the player and the club. The agreement reflects Athletic Bilbao’s confidence in the defender, who remains a key figure despite being one of the oldest players in the squad.

Veteran Defender Continues Long Association with Bilbao

Berchiche began his football journey in Athletic Bilbao’s youth academy before pursuing opportunities abroad, including a spell in England. He later returned to Spain after joining Paris Saint-Germain and eventually re-signed for Athletic Bilbao in the summer of 2018.

With the latest extension, the left-back is set to complete nine seasons with the club’s first team. Over the years, he has established himself as one of the most dependable players in the squad, contributing both defensively and offensively.

First-Choice Left-Back Despite Age

Age has not diminished Berchiche’s importance to the team. He continued to be Athletic Bilbao’s preferred option on the left side of defense during the 2025-26 campaign.

The veteran made 32 appearances in La Liga and also featured prominently in European competition, playing four matches in the UEFA Champions League. In addition, he made three appearances in the Copa del Rey, underlining his consistency and fitness throughout the season.

Athletic Bilbao Reward Experience and Stability

The contract extension highlights Athletic Bilbao’s commitment to maintaining experience and stability within the squad. Berchiche’s leadership and reliability have made him an important asset, and the club believes his presence will continue to benefit the team as they prepare for another challenging season in domestic and European competitions.
