Zimbabwe announce 15-man squad for historic England Test

Harare, May 3, 2025 — Zimbabwe have officially announced a 15-member squad for their upcoming Test match against England, scheduled to take place later this month at Trent Bridge.

The one-off match, set to begin on May 22, is a historic occasion as it marks Zimbabwe’s first Test on English soil in over two decades — their last being in 2003.

The squad announcement follows Zimbabwe’s closely fought Test series against Bangladesh. The Chevrons secured a victory in the opening Test, only for Bangladesh to bounce back and draw the series. Despite the result, Zimbabwe’s performance showcased a promising mix of young talent and experienced leadership.

For the Trent Bridge clash, Zimbabwe have made three changes from their Bangladesh tour squad. Star all-rounder Sikandar Raza has been recalled, replacing Johnathan Campbell. Also returning is wicketkeeper-batter Clive Madande, who has recovered from injury to reclaim the reserve wicketkeeper slot, previously held by Nyasha Mayavo.

However, a key omission from the squad is leg-spinner Vincent Masekesa, who impressed with a five-wicket haul on debut against Bangladesh. Zimbabwe’s selectors have opted for an additional pace option for English conditions, bringing in seamer Newman Nyamhuri.

Zimbabwe Head Coach Justin Sammons expressed high expectations from his squad, saying, “This is a big moment. Playing a Test against England is an opportunity for our players to show they belong at this level. I want to see the team go out with belief, energy, and pride.”

After their England Test, Zimbabwe will face South Africa in a four-day first-class match at Arundel starting June 3. That fixture will serve as a tune-up for the Proteas ahead of their ICC World Test Championship final against Australia, beginning June 11 at Lord’s.
