Abbasi assumes charge as commissioner of AEOI Zone Karachi

LTO Karachi

Karachi, August 12, 2025 – Abdul Qadeer Abbasi, a BS-19 officer of the Inland Revenue Service (IRS), has officially assumed charge as the Commissioner of the Automatic Exchange of Information (AEOI) Zone in Karachi.

This appointment was confirmed through a notification issued by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), effective from August 8, 2025.

The AEOI Zone Karachi is a crucial division within the Large Taxpayers Office (LTO) Karachi, responsible for overseeing high-profile corporate entities and high-net-worth individuals with assets abroad. Abbasi’s new role places him at the forefront of AEOI operations, ensuring compliance and efficient management of international tax information exchange.

Before taking on this important responsibility, Abbasi served as Additional Commissioner at LTO Karachi. His appointment is part of a broader reshuffle of senior officers (BS-19 and BS-20) by the FBR, which took place on August 7, 2025. Abbasi replaces Muhammad Akbar Mahar, a BS-20 officer, who has been transferred to the position of Commissioner Inland Revenue (Zone-VI) at LTO Karachi.

LTO Karachi is the largest revenue-generating office under FBR, having collected a record Rs3.26 trillion in the fiscal year 2024-25. While such transfers are routine, moving senior officers may impact revenue operations. The tax community hopes that Abbasi’s leadership at the AEOI Zone Karachi will contribute positively to the fiscal year 2025-26 performance.
