Afghanistan secured their place in the second round of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup with a convincing victory over Papua New Guinea (PNG) at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy.
This win not only extends Afghanistan’s unbeaten streak in the tournament but also dashes any hopes of progression for New Zealand from Group C.
Afghanistan’s captain won the toss and opted to bowl first, deviating from their usual tactic of batting first in previous matches. The decision proved astute as Afghanistan’s bowlers, led by Fazalhaq Farooqi and Naveen-ul-Haq, dismantled PNG’s batting lineup early on.
Farooqi, in particular, was exceptional, effecting a crucial run out and picking up three wickets in his spell. His all-round performance earned him the Player of the Match award.
PNG, after a quick start, faltered under Afghanistan’s relentless bowling and sharp fielding. They managed only 95 runs before being bowled out, with Afghanistan showcasing their fielding prowess with four run outs in the innings.
Farooqi finished with impressive figures of 3 wickets for 16 runs in his four overs, exemplifying his rising star status in the tournament.
Chasing a modest target, Afghanistan faced some early setbacks, losing both their openers within the first three overs. However, Gulbadin Naib’s composed innings of 49 not out off 36 balls steadied the ship.
Supported by contributions from the middle order, Naib guided Afghanistan comfortably to victory in the 16th over, finishing at 101/3.
The win underscores Afghanistan’s growing reputation as a formidable force in T20 cricket. Their ability to adapt tactics, showcased by their decision to bowl first, and their depth in both batting and bowling departments bode well as they progress to the next round of the tournament.
Looking ahead, Afghanistan will face West Indies in a tune-up match on June 18. Both teams have already secured their spots in the next stage, providing an opportunity for Afghanistan to further refine their strategies and build momentum.
As Afghanistan prepares for tougher challenges in the latter stages of the tournament, their convincing performance against PNG serves as a statement of intent.
With players like Farooqi shining brightly, Afghanistan remains a team to watch, capable of causing upsets and challenging the established order in international T20 cricket.
