Hong Kong witnessed football drama at its finest as Al-Ahli lifted the Saudi Super Cup after edging past Al-Nassr 5-3 in a tense penalty shootout, following a 2-2 draw in regular time.
The victory marks a historic moment for Al-Ahli, securing their second title in the competition’s 12-year history.
Cristiano Ronaldo gave Al-Nassr the lead in the 41st minute with a precise penalty, reaching a remarkable milestone of 100 competitive goals for the Saudi club. Croatian midfielder Marcelo Brozovic extended their advantage in the 82nd minute. However, Al-Ahli staged a dramatic comeback with Franck Kessie equalizing deep into first-half stoppage time at 45+6, and Brazilian defender Roger Ibanez da Silva striking in the 89th minute to force the shootout.
In the decisive penalties, Al-Ahli held their nerve, converting all five spot-kicks, while Al-Nassr faltered once, sealing their fate. The win followed Al-Ahli’s dominant 5-1 semi-final victory over Al-Qadsiah, while Al-Nassr had advanced by defeating Al-Ittihad 2-1.
This edition of the Saudi Super Cup adds to the rich history of the tournament, previously won by Al-Hilal (5 titles), Al-Nassr (2), Al-Fateh, Al-Shabab, Al-Ahli, and Al-Ittihad.
Meanwhile, Ronaldo’s goal-scoring achievement places him in elite company, becoming the only player to score 100 competitive goals for four clubs—Real Madrid (450), Manchester United (145), Juventus (101), and now Al-Nassr—surpassing legends Isidro Langara, Romario, and Neymar.
