Alert Issued for Heavy Rains and Urban Flooding: Pakistan Weather Report – July 20, 2023

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued an alert for urban flooding due to heavy rains in various cities across the country.

There is a possibility of urban flooding in low-lying areas of Islamabad/Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Sialkot, Narowal, Gujranwala, Lahore, and D.G.Khan from July 19th to July 22nd. Additionally, the heavy rainfall may also trigger landslides in vulnerable regions like Murree, Galliyat, Kashmir, Gilgit Baltistan, and hilly areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa during this period.

The weather pattern is influenced by monsoon currents from both the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, which are penetrating most parts of the country.

Looking back at July 19, 2023, rain, wind, and thundershowers were expected in several regions including Kashmir, Pothohar region, Islamabad, Punjab, northeast and south Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and upper/southeast Sindh. Heavyfalls were also likely at isolated places in these regions during that forecast period.

For July 20, 2023, a similar weather pattern is expected with rain, wind, and thundershowers anticipated in Kashmir, Pothohar region, Islamabad, Punjab, northeast and south Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Sindh. Heavyfalls may occur at isolated places in the same regions as on the previous day.

In the past 24 hours, rain, wind, and thundershowers (with few heavyfalls) were observed in Islamabad, Pothohar region, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Kashmir. The weather remained hot and humid in other parts of the country.
