In anticipation of the upcoming T20I series against England, the West Indies have unveiled a formidable 15-player squad for the first three matches, marking the eagerly awaited return of Andre Russell.
Russell, a T20 stalwart, last donned the West Indies colors during the 2021 T20 World Cup in the UAE and Oman. Renowned for his explosive batting, he has accumulated nearly 8000 runs in T20 competitions at an impressive strike rate of 167, complemented by over 400 wickets with the ball.
The squad sees new faces, with Matthew Forde earning his spot after an impressive performance in the recent ODI series against England and standout displays in domestic T20 leagues.
Sherfane Rutherford and spinner Gudakesh Motie have also secured positions, with Motie overcoming injury setbacks that ruled him out of the India Series.
Notable exclusions from the squad that triumphed against India include Johnson Charles, Obed McCoy, Odean Smith, and Oshane Thomas.
Shai Hope has been appointed vice-captain, supporting captain Rovman Powell in the T20I lineup. This complements Hope’s existing role as captain of the West Indies ODI team.
Lead selector Desmond Haynes emphasized the squad’s strategic selection, aiming to set the stage for success in the upcoming T20 World Cup, which the West Indies co-hosts with the USA.
Haynes stated, “We have selected a squad that we think gives us the best chance of success in that tournament. We will continue to assess in the lead up to the competition.”
The West Indies will be closely monitoring performances, and adjustments to the squad may be made ahead of the fourth and fifth T20Is scheduled in Trinidad on December 19 and 21.
