Apple is reportedly preparing a major upgrade for its popular tracking device, the AirTag, with the next-generation model now expected to launch in the first half of 2026.
The new AirTag was originally planned for release this year, but according to recent reports, Apple quietly pushed the launch window to 2026 as it continues refining the device’s new features. The update coincides with growing competition, as brands like Xiaomi are also rumored to be entering the tracker market.
The upcoming AirTag is said to introduce several improvements aimed at boosting accuracy, usability, and overall tracking reliability. One of the biggest enhancements will be an upgraded pairing process, designed to make initial setup faster and more seamless for users.
Apple is also working on improved Precision Finding, which will likely offer more accurate directional and distance-based location guidance. However, this feature may depend on a new Ultra-Wideband (UWB) chip, meaning older AirTag models may not receive it through a software update.
Another new capability is a feature referred to as Improved Moving, which is expected to allow users to track precise location data even while the AirTag is in motion. This would be particularly useful for tracking items such as bags, vehicles, or packages. Apple is also developing enhanced accuracy for crowded environments, where interference from multiple devices can make tracking more challenging.
One open question is how many of these new features will arrive on the original AirTag via firmware updates. While some software-based improvements may roll out to existing users, hardware-dependent features—especially those tied to the upgraded UWB chip—will likely remain exclusive to the 2026 model.
In addition to the AirTag refresh, Apple is reportedly preparing an updated HomePod mini. The new model isn’t expected to introduce major design or feature changes but will instead receive a processor upgrade. The current HomePod mini uses Apple’s S5 chip, while the upcoming version is said to adopt the more powerful S10 chip. Despite the internal upgrade, leaks suggest the speaker still won’t support Apple Intelligence features.
With enhanced tracking capabilities and hardware upgrades on the way, Apple’s next round of device updates aims to strengthen its ecosystem and stay ahead in the smart tracker market.
