Apple has announced that its App Store has thwarted over $7 billion in potentially fraudulent transactions from 2020 to 2023.
This revelation comes from Apple’s fourth annual fraud prevention analysis, highlighting the company’s relentless efforts to maintain a safe and trustworthy platform for its users and developers.
Since its launch in 2008, the App Store has been a beacon of security and reliability in the digital marketplace. Apple’s sophisticated antifraud initiatives have evolved in response to increasing digital threats, employing advanced tools and dedicated teams to monitor and counteract fraudulent activities daily. These measures have resulted in the blocking of more than 14 million stolen credit cards and the prevention of over 3.3 million potentially fraudulent accounts.
In 2023 alone, Apple prevented more than $1.8 billion in fraudulent transactions and rejected over 1.7 million app submissions for failing to meet its stringent privacy, security, and content standards. This year also saw the termination of nearly 374 million developer and customer accounts and the removal of close to 152 million fraudulent ratings and reviews, further safeguarding the integrity of the App Store.
Apple’s proactive stance extends beyond just transactional security. The company has developed robust systems to quickly identify and terminate fraudulent accounts, blocking over 153 million fraudulent customer account creations and deactivating nearly 374 million accounts for fraud and abuse in 2023. Apple also thwarted nearly 3.8 million attempts to install or launch apps distributed illicitly through its Developer Enterprise Program.
The App Review team, comprising over 500 experts, plays a crucial role in maintaining the App Store’s integrity. In 2023, the team reviewed approximately 132,500 apps weekly, rejecting more than 1.7 million submissions for various violations, including privacy breaches and fraudulent activities.
Apple’s ongoing investment in security technologies ensures that the App Store remains a safe haven for both users and developers. By effectively combating fraudulent activities, Apple upholds the App Store’s reputation as a reliable and secure platform for app distribution.
