Apple’s long-anticipated foldable iPhone has reportedly entered the prototype testing phase, with an expected launch window in 2026.
According to a new report from DigiTimes, citing supply chain sources, Apple began testing a functional prototype of its first foldable smartphone last month.
The testing phase is anticipated to continue through the end of 2025. Once complete, the device will progress to the Engineering Verification Test (EVT) stage. If development stays on track, the foldable iPhone is expected to debut alongside the iPhone 18 lineup in September 2026.
Sources suggest the foldable iPhone will feature a 7.8-inch Samsung-made OLED display with an under-display camera. Notably, the device is rumored to exclude Face ID in favor of a side-mounted Touch ID scanner.
Apple is also said to be working on minimizing the screen crease, with insiders describing it as “almost invisible.” When folded, the phone will reportedly be just 9 to 9.5mm thick—an impressively slim profile for a foldable device.
In terms of build quality, Apple may incorporate a titanium alloy frame paired with a liquid metal hinge to ensure enhanced durability. This design approach aligns with the company’s reputation for premium materials and engineering excellence.
As for pricing, the foldable iPhone is expected to carry a premium price tag. Industry analysts predict a launch price between $2,100 and $2,300, positioning the device as a luxury offering in Apple’s smartphone portfolio.
Meanwhile, the report also reveals that Apple has temporarily halted development of its foldable iPad. Challenges in manufacturing and lower-than-expected consumer demand have prompted Apple to shift focus away from the foldable tablet for now.
