Apple iPhone 17 Rumored Display Upgrades: What to Expect

Smartphone displays remain one of the most important features, and Apple’s upcoming iPhone 17 series is rumored to bring some major improvements in this area.

With the official launch event approaching, speculation is building around possible screen upgrades for both the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro models.

One of the biggest rumored changes is the addition of a fast-refreshing ProMotion display to the standard iPhone 17. Until now, Apple has limited the 120Hz refresh rate to its Pro models, while the base iPhone has remained stuck at 60Hz.

Reports suggest that the iPhone 17 will finally support a higher refresh rate, offering smoother scrolling and a better gaming experience. Even if it doesn’t fully match the adaptive 1–120Hz refresh found on the Pro series, this will still be a significant leap forward.

Screen size is also expected to increase. The iPhone 17 may replace its 6.1-inch display with a larger 6.3-inch panel, aligning with the iPhone 16 Pro. While the change is small, users will benefit from extra viewing space without sacrificing portability.

Another upgrade could be a smaller Dynamic Island. Apple is rumored to adopt new “metalens” technology that reduces the size of the Face ID components, leading to a more compact cutout. Initially expected only on the iPhone 17 Pro Max, later reports suggest the slimmer Dynamic Island could appear across the entire lineup.

For Pro users, display efficiency may also see improvements. Leaks indicate that Apple has been testing low-dielectric TEE technology, which could enhance durability and reduce power consumption. While mass production challenges may delay this feature, it remains a possibility for the iPhone 17 Pro models.

Lastly, brightness is an area where competition is heating up. Rival devices like the Pixel 10 Pro already boast peak brightness levels exceeding 3,000 nits. Rumors claim Apple will enhance the iPhone 17 Pro’s brightness, allowing the screen to stay clearer in direct sunlight, though exact figures remain unknown.

With Apple’s September event around the corner, all eyes are on the iPhone 17 lineup to see how many of these rumored display upgrades become reality.
