Apple’s first foldable smartphone, tentatively referred to as the iPhone Fold, is reportedly on track for a late 2026 launch.
After years of speculation, the long-awaited foldable iPhone is expected to mark Apple’s entry into the competitive folding smartphone market with a premium design and cutting-edge technology.
According to renowned Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the iPhone Fold will not feature an in-display fingerprint scanner, despite earlier rumors suggesting otherwise. Instead, Apple is said to be sticking with a side-mounted capacitive Touch ID sensor. Kuo claims that Apple has already selected Luxshare ICT as the supplier for this component, reinforcing the likelihood of this design choice.
The decision seems practical, given that a foldable device would require two separate under-display fingerprint scanners—one for the 7.8-inch folding internal display and another for the 5.5-inch cover screen. By opting for a side-mounted sensor, Apple can streamline production while maintaining reliability. Apple continues to use similar Touch ID sensors in its iPads, making this move consistent with its product strategy.
While the iPhone Fold is expected to generate massive buzz, its rumored price tag of $2,000 to $2,500 may place it firmly in the ultra-premium category, limiting mainstream adoption. Nonetheless, Apple’s entry into the foldable space is likely to push the industry forward, as competitors like Samsung, Huawei, and Oppo continue to refine their foldable devices.
The iPhone Fold is expected to offer a sleek design with a large 7.8-inch foldable display for immersive content consumption and a 5.5-inch external screen for everyday use. Combined with Apple’s ecosystem of apps and services, the device could set new standards in durability, usability, and performance.
Although Apple has not officially confirmed the iPhone Fold, mounting supply chain reports and analyst predictions point toward a late 2026 release window. With its unique approach and premium pricing, Apple’s first foldable iPhone could redefine the high-end smartphone experience.
