Apple is reportedly preparing to launch its first-ever foldable smartphone next year, and new reports suggest the company has managed to significantly reduce the cost of one of its most complex components — the hinge.
According to renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the iPhone Fold’s hinge will now be around $70 to $80 cheaper than the market had initially expected.
This cost reduction could help Apple maintain higher profit margins on the upcoming foldable iPhone, which is anticipated to debut in 2026. Kuo’s report reveals that 65% of the hinges will be produced by a joint venture between Foxconn and Shin Zu Shing, while the remaining 35% will come from Amphenol. Additionally, Luxshare-ICT — another key Apple partner — may join the hinge supply chain sometime after 2027, potentially driving costs down even further.
The analyst explains that the price drop is primarily due to assembly design optimization by Foxconn, allowing for more efficient production without compromising on quality or durability. This innovation marks an important step for Apple as it moves toward entering the foldable smartphone market, currently dominated by Samsung and Huawei.
By minimizing hinge production costs, Apple can either improve its profit margins or strategically price the iPhone Fold to compete more effectively with rival foldable devices. However, given Apple’s premium pricing strategy, analysts expect the company to focus on maximizing profits rather than offering discounts.
The inclusion of Luxshare-ICT in the future could indicate a growing competitive landscape among Apple’s assembly partners. As the hinge becomes a critical component in foldable phone design, it is quickly emerging as a new battleground for system assemblers, driving innovation and efficiency across Apple’s supply chain.
The iPhone Fold is rumored to feature a book-style folding design, cutting-edge display technology, and Apple’s signature performance optimization. While details remain under wraps, the latest supply chain insights suggest Apple is strategically preparing to deliver a premium foldable experience — at a more efficient production cost.
