Apple may soon join the growing list of smartphone makers using ultra-high-resolution cameras. A new rumor suggests that the company is testing a powerful 200-megapixel camera sensor for a future iPhone model.
While many Android smartphones already feature 200MP camera technology, Apple has so far relied on lower-resolution sensors paired with advanced image processing. However, this strategy could soon change if recent supply-chain reports are accurate.
According to well-known tipster Digital Chat Station, Apple is currently evaluating a large 200MP image sensor for upcoming iPhone models. The information was shared on the Chinese social media platform Weibo, where the leaker cited sources within the smartphone supply chain.
The sensor reportedly measures 1/1.12 inches, making it significantly larger than many current smartphone camera sensors. A sensor of this size can capture more light, which usually results in better image detail, improved low-light performance, and enhanced dynamic range.
The report indicates that Apple is testing the sensor primarily for the main rear camera rather than the telephoto lens. This suggests the company may be considering a major upgrade to the primary camera system in future iPhone releases.
Currently, Apple’s flagship devices such as the iPhone 17 Pro Max are expected to feature a triple-camera setup with three 48MP sensors. While this configuration already delivers strong photography performance, a jump to a 200MP main sensor would represent a significant leap in resolution.
Interestingly, the same 1/1.12-inch sensor is rumored to appear in the upcoming Oppo Find X9 Ultra. That device is expected to feature dual 200MP cameras, highlighting how Android manufacturers are pushing the limits of smartphone photography.
Meanwhile, another flagship Android device, the vivo X300 Ultra, has already confirmed its camera hardware. The phone will reportedly include two 200MP cameras, including a Sony LYTIA-901 sensor for the main camera and a Samsung HP0 sensor for the periscope telephoto lens.
Despite the testing reports, the presence of a 200MP camera in the next iPhone generation is not guaranteed. The sensor is expected to become commercially available next year, meaning Apple could introduce the technology in a future iPhone model rather than the immediate lineup.
If the rumor proves accurate, Apple could finally enter the 200MP smartphone camera race, bringing a new level of photographic capability to its flagship devices.
