Apple is preparing to significantly expand its satellite connectivity features for both iPhone and Apple Watch users in the coming years.

According to a new report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the tech giant has ambitious plans to enhance satellite-powered communication and navigation capabilities — though some of these innovations are still a long way from launch.

Apple’s future satellite developments will continue to rely on Globalstar’s network, which will need major upgrades to meet the company’s growing demands. Once implemented, these enhancements are expected to bring more powerful and reliable satellite services to Apple devices worldwide.

Satellite Maps and Offline Navigation Coming Soon

One of the most exciting upcoming additions is satellite maps integration for Apple Maps, allowing users to navigate and access maps even without cellular connectivity. This feature would be a game-changer for travelers, hikers, and outdoor enthusiasts in remote areas.

Reports also suggest that Apple is developing an API (Application Programming Interface) that would allow third-party developers to integrate satellite connectivity into their own apps, expanding the ecosystem beyond Apple’s built-in software.

Easier and Smarter Satellite Connectivity

Future iPhones are expected to feature streamlined satellite connections that no longer require users to point their devices toward the sky. Instead, Apple is working on technology that enables satellite access indoors or even from a user’s pocket, greatly improving convenience and accessibility.

The iPhone 18 series, expected next year, could introduce 5G Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) support — enabling carriers to utilize satellite signals for wider network coverage, especially in rural or underdeveloped areas.

Enhanced Messaging Over Satellite

Apple also aims to upgrade its satellite messaging features, adding the ability to send and receive photos over satellite networks. The company first introduced emergency satellite connectivity with the iPhone 14 series, marking its initial step into this technology.

As Apple continues to expand its satellite ecosystem, the company appears to be positioning future devices as more independent and reliable communication tools — even when far beyond traditional network coverage.
