Apple is reportedly preparing a bold new chapter in its smartphone journey as the iPhone approaches its 20th anniversary in 2027.
According to a recent report by Omdia senior researcher Heo Moo-yeol, Apple may skip the “iPhone 19” name entirely and jump straight to the iPhone 20 series, marking the occasion with a significant design overhaul.
This wouldn’t be the first time Apple has taken a leap in its naming convention. Back in 2017, the company introduced the iPhone X to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the iPhone lineup, skipping the number “9.” That release introduced a major redesign featuring Face ID and an edge-to-edge display — changes that still define the iPhone today.
The iPhone 20 series, expected to debut in 2027, is rumored to bring another major transformation. Reports suggest a bezel-less display and a seamless “single-glass” appearance, with curved edges that blend the front and back panels.
This futuristic design could make the iPhone 20 appear as if it’s crafted entirely from one continuous piece of glass, reinforcing Apple’s reputation for innovation and premium aesthetics.
Interestingly, the roadmap also hints at some strategic shifts before the anniversary release. In 2026, Apple may skip the vanilla iPhone 18 model and instead launch iPhone 18 Air, iPhone 18 Pro, and the highly anticipated iPhone Fold.
Then, in early 2027, the company is expected to unveil the standard iPhone 20 alongside a new iPhone 18e, an affordable variant targeting broader audiences. Later that year, Apple could hold a separate event to launch the iPhone 20 Pro, iPhone 20 Air, and Fold 2 models.
If these reports hold true, 2027 could mark one of the most significant years in Apple’s history, combining a milestone anniversary, a revolutionary design, and a reimagined lineup strategy. The iPhone 20 series may well redefine the next decade of smartphone innovation.
