Apple will replace iPhone Duo’s foldable screen cover for $19.99

AppleCare customers can replace the matte top layer of the foldable display for $19.99, while inner screen repairs cost $99

Apple is offering iPhone Duo owners the option to replace the top layer of its foldable display, potentially making one of the most vulnerable components of the device easier and cheaper to maintain.

According to Apple’s service and repair information, the matte screen cover sitting above the iPhone Duo’s main foldable display can be replaced separately. Customers with active AppleCare can have the layer replaced for $19.99 by visiting an Apple-authorised service provider.

Affordable Foldable Screen Repair

The replaceable top layer is designed to protect the foldable display and provide its matte finish. Apple’s hardware engineering team has previously indicated that the company wanted users to have the option of replacing this layer once it becomes worn after extended use.

Although Apple has worked to make the protective layer as durable as possible, regular use could eventually lead to scratches, wear or other deterioration, making replacement useful for owners who plan to keep the foldable phone for several years.

AppleCare also provides coverage for several other iPhone Duo repairs. The cover display or back glass can be repaired for $29, while replacement of the inner display costs $99.

Accidental Damage and Theft Coverage

For accidental damage, AppleCare customers face a $99 service fee, while theft and loss protection costs $149, according to the service information.

However, an important question remains: how much will replacing the inner display cover cost without AppleCare? Apple has not yet provided that figure in the information cited.

It is also unclear whether the top layer will be genuinely user-replaceable or whether the process will require a service provider.

Third-Party Covers Could Follow

The replaceable layer could also open the door to third-party alternatives. If Apple allows compatible replacement films, manufacturers could potentially offer different finishes, including privacy layers or glossy surfaces.

More details should become available once the iPhone Duo begins shipping and repair procedures are tested in practice.

Samsung already offers a comparable approach for its foldable phones. The company provides the first screen protector replacement free of charge for Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip devices within the first 12 months of purchase, while subsequent replacements cost $19.99.
