Ariana Grande, fresh off a successful year and widespread acclaim for her portrayal of Glinda in Wicked, has addressed rumors surrounding her potential role as Megara in Disney’s live-action adaptation of Hercules. The multi-talented singer and actress shared her thoughts during an appearance on Variety’s Awards Circuit podcast.
“It’s really funny because I grew up singing the Muses’ parts,” Grande shared, reflecting on her love for the 1997 animated classic. “I have seen some of that [fan speculation], but it’s never been an actual discussion.” She added with a laugh, “I was always the little girl singing the background.”
Although flattered by the fan-casting, Grande suggested another actress she feels would be perfect for the role. “As much as I really love transforming for a role – and I do love the idea of, you know, a darker, sort of c—-y role like Megara – I do think that I would be remiss if I didn’t say this: I think [Elizabeth] Gillies should be Megara.”
Speaking about her former Victorious co-star, Grande gushed, “Oh god, that would be a fantastic role for her.” She also weighed in on fan suggestions for Hercules, adding, “Paul Mescal? He’d be a great Hercules, too.”
Grande’s connection to Hercules is not new. In 2020, she performed a stunning rendition of “I Won’t Say (I’m In Love)” during a Disney Family Singalong event. The performance received widespread praise and further fueled fan-casting her as Megara in a live-action adaptation.
Disney has since confirmed that a live-action Hercules is in development, with Guy Ritchie set to direct. While the announcement has excited fans, the release date for the film remains unknown.
Ariana Grande’s comments, paired with her genuine enthusiasm for the project and her support for Elizabeth Gillies, have only heightened anticipation for the casting decisions. Whether or not she takes on the role of Megara, Grande’s connection to the beloved Disney classic remains undeniable.
