Aryna Sabalenka focused on improvement, not revenge, ahead of Australian Open 2026

World number one Aryna Sabalenka has said she isn’t seeking revenge after last year’s shock Australian Open final loss to American Madison Keys. The Belarusian superstar had aimed to become the first woman since Martina Hingis to win three consecutive Australian Opens, but Keys secured her maiden Grand Slam title with an inspired performance on Rod Laver Arena.

Speaking ahead of a warm-up event in Brisbane, Sabalenka emphasized that her approach remains consistent regardless of past outcomes.

“It doesn’t matter which tournament it is. If I’m defending champion or lost in the first round last year, the goal is always the same – to bring my best tennis and to improve my game. I always focus on myself, developing my game, and making sure I’m 100 percent there,” she said.

Sabalenka’s lead-up to the 2026 season was unconventional, including a high-profile “Battle of the Sexes” match against Nick Kyrgios in Dubai, which drew criticism. Despite that, she expressed enthusiasm about returning to Australia, where she has enjoyed considerable success.

“I definitely don’t like the heat, but the people – yes. The atmosphere is incredible, especially in Melbourne. The support really motivates me,” she added, reflecting on whether last year’s defeat added extra incentive.

The Belarusian opens her season in Brisbane, valuing the tournament for its challenging matches against top-tier opponents. This year’s draw features seven of the world’s top 10 players. Sabalenka has a first-round bye and will face either Spain’s Cristina Bucsa or a qualifier in the second round.

“It’s a tough draw with many great players. These matches help me prepare for the Australian Open,” she said, highlighting her strategy of using Brisbane as a key season opener.

Sabalenka remains focused on improving her game and staying fully prepared, rather than dwelling on last year’s loss, aiming to start 2026 on a strong note.
