Asia Cup Returns to Pakistan After ACC Accepts Hybrid Model

The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) has given the green light to Pakistan’s proposed hybrid model for hosting the Asia Cup 2023. The tournament is scheduled to take place from August 31, 2023 to September 17, 2023 and will be hosted by Pakistan, marking the return of multi-nation cricket matches to the country after a gap of 15 years. Pakistan previously successfully organized the six-team ACC Asia Cup 50-over tournament in 2008.

Najam Sethi, Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Management Committee, expressed his gratitude to the ACC for accepting the hybrid model during a press conference. He highlighted that the PCB will serve as the event host, with matches being held in Pakistan and Sri Lanka acting as the neutral venue.

This arrangement was necessary due to the Indian cricket team’s inability to travel to Pakistan. Sethi acknowledged the challenges faced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in obtaining government approval and clearance for cross-border travel.

Sethi emphasized that the hybrid model was the most suitable solution under the circumstances, ensuring the event proceeds as planned while maintaining unity within the ACC. He expressed his optimism about the future of cricket in the subcontinent and its exciting prospects for fans.

Sethi also highlighted the PCB’s successful delivery of high-profile bilateral series and the HBL Pakistan Super League events, which garnered praise from international cricketers.

Looking ahead, Sethi stated that discussions and negotiations would continue with the ACC and Sri Lanka Cricket to address minor operational and logistical details.

The PCB is committed to leaving no stone unturned in ensuring the successful delivery of the tournament, as it holds significant importance for the teams participating in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 in India, scheduled for October/November.

Sethi commended ACC President Jay Shah’s efforts to strengthen the council and provide opportunities for emerging Asian nations.

With the ACC accepting Pakistan’s hybrid model, cricket fans in Pakistan and Sri Lanka can anticipate an exciting Asia Cup, setting the stage for the ICC Champions Trophy to be hosted in Pakistan in February/March 2025.
