Audi Expands Voice Control Capabilities with ChatGPT Integration

Audi is revolutionizing the driving experience by integrating ChatGPT into its infotainment systems, powered by Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service.

Starting this July, approximately two million Audi models manufactured since 2021 and equipped with the third-generation modular infotainment system (MIB 3) will feature enhanced voice control capabilities.

This integration allows drivers to interact with their vehicles using natural language, enabling seamless communication and access to information while on the road. Future Audi models, including the Q6 e-tron1 with the E3 1.2 electronics architecture, will also benefit from ChatGPT through Cerence Chat Pro.

By embedding ChatGPT into the MIB 3 system, starting with the 2021 Audi A3, Audi enhances functionalities beyond traditional voice control, enabling users to manage infotainment, navigation, climate control, and even pose general knowledge queries without diverting their attention from driving.

This integration not only enhances safety but also ensures a user-friendly experience, supported by the automotive-grade ChatGPT solution from Cerence Inc.

Marcus Keith, Audi’s Vice President of Interior, Infotainment, and Connectivity Development, emphasizes the synergy achieved by integrating ChatGPT into Audi’s voice control systems.

He highlights, “We are merging the strengths of advanced voice control with secure and accessible AI-based knowledge delivery, marking a significant advancement in our in-cabin experience.”

In addition to improving existing voice assistant features, Audi has fortified its Audi assistant in models featuring the new E3 1.2 electronics architecture, debuting with the Audi Q6 e-tron1.

Passengers can activate the assistant with simple voice commands like “Hey Audi,” seamlessly executing vehicle functions, finding destinations, or providing weather updates.

ChatGPT is summoned only for general knowledge queries, ensuring data security with all interactions strictly ephemeral and disconnected from vehicle data.

Looking ahead, Audi envisions leveraging AI to enhance various facets of its operations, from customer interactions to optimizing business processes.

This commitment aligns with Audi’s principles on responsible AI use, adhering to regulatory frameworks like the EU Data Act and AI Act, and fostering an ethical approach across its AI applications.

By harnessing the potential of AI through innovations like ChatGPT, Audi continues to set new standards in automotive technology, enriching both the driving experience and operational efficiencies for the future.
