Darwin, August 12, 2025 – A record-shattering unbeaten 125* from Dewald Brevis inspired the Proteas to a dominant 53-run victory over Australia in the second T20I, squaring the three-match series 1-1.
The 22-year-old batting sensation became the youngest South African to register a T20I century and the second-fastest to reach the milestone for the Proteas, finishing with 12 boundaries and eight towering sixes in his 56-ball masterclass.
Brevis reached his hundred in just 41 deliveries — only behind David Miller’s blistering 35-ball ton against Bangladesh in 2017. Australia, who opted to bowl first, enjoyed early success when Ben Dwarshuis removed Ryan Rickelton in the fourth over, and Glenn Maxwell followed with two quick strikes, leaving the Proteas struggling at 57-3 after seven overs.
However, Brevis, undeterred, counter-attacked with breathtaking power and precision. Partnering with Tristan Stubbs in a game-turning 126-run stand, he propelled South Africa to 218, the highest T20I total ever scored by the Proteas on Australian soil. His innings also set a new record for the highest T20I score against Australia, surpassing Ruturaj Gaikwad’s unbeaten 123 from 2023.

In reply, Australia’s chase faltered early when Kagiso Rabada dismissed Travis Head and Cameron Green in quick succession. Although Tim David continued his fine form from the first T20I with another rapid half-century, his dismissal to Rabada extinguished the hosts’ hopes. Alex Carey offered late resistance, but with wickets tumbling at regular intervals, Australia finished well short on 165 — their second-heaviest T20I defeat at home.
For the Proteas, this victory was more than just a series-leveling triumph; it was a statement ahead of the decisive third T20I in Cairns on August 16, where both teams will battle for bragging rights. With Brevis in such imperious form, the Proteas will head into the finale brimming with confidence.
