Perth, October 19, 2025 – Australia took a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series after defeating India by seven wickets under the DLS method in a rain-affected first One-Day International at the Perth Stadium on Sunday.
The game was initially scheduled for 50 overs a side but was reduced to 26 overs per innings due to persistent rain interruptions. Despite the shortened format, the home side delivered a clinical all-round performance, marking India’s first ODI loss of 2025 and Shubman Gill’s first defeat as captain.
Batting first after being sent in, India struggled against Australia’s world-class pace attack. The visitors lost Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and skipper Gill inside the first ten overs as Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood exploited Perth’s bounce and movement to perfection. With the scoreboard reading 60/5 at one stage, KL Rahul (28) and Axar Patel (24) tried to steady the innings with a brief 39-run stand. Nitish Kumar Reddy’s fighting cameo helped India reach 136/9 in 26 overs. Starc and Hazlewood shared five wickets between them, while debutant Mitchell Owen impressed with two scalps and Matthew Kuhnemann bowled with sharp control.
Chasing a revised target under the DLS method, Australia made light work of the total. Openers Josh Philippe and captain Mitchell Marsh provided a solid start, adding 55 runs for the first wicket. Marsh remained unbeaten on 46, guiding the hosts home alongside Matt Renshaw, who held his nerve on ODI debut. Philippe’s fluent stroke play, combined with Marsh’s composure, ensured Australia cruised to victory with more than an over to spare.
Mitchell Marsh was named Player of the Match for his all-round leadership and match-winning innings. Speaking after the game, Marsh said, “It was a strange game with all the weather around, but great to start the series with a win. It’s always special to play in front of a home crowd here in Perth.”
Indian captain Shubman Gill admitted his team was on the back foot after early wickets and praised his side’s effort to take the game deep despite defending a small total.
With this win, Australia lead the series 1-0. The action now moves to Adelaide, where the second ODI will be played on Thursday, October 23, 2025. India will aim to bounce back and level the series, while Australia look to wrap it up early.
