Marvel Studios is set to reshape its cinematic universe with the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, bringing back Robert Downey Jr. in a surprising new role as the iconic villain Victor Von Doom, studio chief Kevin Feige confirmed.

Downey, who portrayed Iron Man for over a decade, last appeared in Avengers: Endgame, where his character made a heroic sacrifice. His return marks a significant shift for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), leveraging its expanding multiverse narrative.

“We never lost touch with Downey. He is ingrained in the fabric of the MCU,” Feige told Entertainment Weekly, adding that casting him as one of Marvel’s most powerful villains was a deliberate creative decision.

Feige said the multiverse concept has allowed Marvel to reimagine established characters and actors. The idea to recast Downey as Doctor Doom gained momentum during the actor’s recent career resurgence following his critically acclaimed role in Oppenheimer.

Directors Joe Russo and Anthony Russo, returning to helm the project, said the character of Doom offers vast storytelling potential due to his immense power and complexity.

The film will bring together a wide ensemble cast from across Marvel franchises. Chris Evans reprises his role as Steve Rogers, alongside Chris Hemsworth as Thor and Paul Rudd as Ant-Man. The new Fantastic Four, led by Pedro Pascal, will also feature prominently.

Legacy characters from earlier Marvel adaptations are also set to appear, including Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart, reprising their roles as Magneto and Professor Xavier.

Preview footage shown at CinemaCon highlighted action sequences involving Shang-Chi and Gambit, as well as confrontations between established and newer characters, underscoring the film’s multiverse-driven narrative.

With Downey’s Doctor Doom at its core, the film is expected to explore conflicts between multiple generations of heroes and villains.

Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled for theatrical release on December 18, 2026.
