Pakistan Test captain outlines his leadership approach, stressing discipline, fitness, and consistent performances ahead of challenging tours of the West Indies and England.
Pakistan Test captain Babar Azam has expressed confidence in his second stint as the national red-ball skipper, stating that discipline, fitness and performance will form the foundation of his leadership as the team prepares for important overseas assignments.
Speaking during an interview on Straight Drive with Salman Butt, Babar said leading Pakistan is always a privilege and that his previous captaincy experience has helped him grow both as a player and as a leader.
He explained that the lessons learned over the years have brought greater maturity, improved planning and a clearer mindset, leaving him confident about guiding the team successfully.
The Pakistan skipper revealed that he had carefully reflected on his earlier tenure as captain, analysing both successful decisions and areas where improvements could have been made. According to Babar, reviewing past experiences has helped him rebuild his approach with greater clarity while maintaining a positive outlook for the future.
Highlighting the team’s composition, Babar pointed out that Pakistan currently has a youthful Test squad featuring several outstanding performers from domestic cricket. He stressed that one of his biggest responsibilities as captain is to support young cricketers, keep them relaxed under pressure and stand by them during difficult phases.
He added that international cricket presents constant challenges, making it important for senior players to help reduce the burden on newcomers through regular communication on and off the field.
Babar identified discipline, fitness and performance as the three non-negotiable principles that will define his captaincy. He maintained that while he always backs his teammates, there will be no compromise on these core values as Pakistan aims to build a stronger Test unit.
Discussing the recently concluded National Cricket Academy (NCA) Red-Ball Camp, Babar described it as a crucial step in improving the team’s overall preparedness. He noted that Pakistan had occasionally fallen behind in fitness during Test matches, affecting batting, bowling and fielding standards.
The camp, therefore, focused heavily on physical conditioning, fielding drills and developing patience under demanding conditions to prepare players for the pressures of long-format cricket.
The Test captain also said that coaches and senior players worked extensively with the squad on handling difficult match situations, managing pressure and responding effectively when opponents execute strategic plans. Sharing experience within the group, he added, is essential for building confidence among younger players.
Looking ahead to Pakistan’s tours of the West Indies and England, Babar explained that the team’s preparations have been tailored to suit the expected playing conditions.
He acknowledged that the Caribbean tour would present significant challenges but expressed confidence in the team’s preparation. He also noted that several Pakistani players possess county cricket experience in England, which should prove valuable during the tour.
Speaking about his own batting philosophy, Babar emphasised that he always prioritises the team’s requirements over personal milestones. Whether the situation demands aggressive stroke play or patient defensive batting, he said his approach is shaped entirely by what benefits the team most.
