China’s off-road market is gearing up for a revolution with the official launch of the BAIC BJ40e EREV on April 7th. This range-extended electric SUV (EREV) promises a staggering 1200km total driving range, blending off-road capability with cutting-edge electric technology.
Since pre-orders opened in December 2024, the BJ40e has generated substantial interest, positioning itself as a major contender in the evolving SUV landscape.
Electrified Power Meets Off-Road Excellence
The BAIC BJ40e differentiates itself with its innovative EREV powertrain. Unlike conventional hybrids, its 1.5-liter turbocharged petrol engine (185 hp) functions solely as a generator, supplying power to a 40.3 kWh ternary lithium battery.
This system drives two electric motors—one on each axle—delivering a combined output of 403 kW (540 hp) and an impressive 655 Nm of torque. As a result, this hefty 2,640 kg SUV can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.5 seconds.
Despite its robust performance, the BJ40e remains fuel-efficient. It boasts a WLTC combined fuel consumption of only 1.39 L/100 km. The EREV setup enables a remarkable CLTC-rated total range of 1200 km, with an electric-only range of 152 km. Furthermore, the battery supports DC fast charging, allowing a 30% to 80% recharge in just 30 minutes.
Iconic Design, High-Tech Interior
Visually, the BJ40e retains the rugged, boxy styling of its second-generation petrol-powered counterpart, which debuted in late 2023. Its angular lines, flared fenders, and robust stance underscore its off-road DNA.
Inside, the SUV adopts a futuristic, tech-laden cabin. A 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster provides vital driving data, while dual 12.8-inch screens dominate the center console, offering infotainment and entertainment for passengers.
The system runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 SoC and features an AI-powered voice assistant for seamless interaction.
Dimensions and Pricing
Measuring 4,790 mm in length, 1,940 mm in width, and 1,964 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,760 mm, the BJ40e is comparable in size to the Mazda CX-50. Pricing in China is expected to range between 224,800 yuan (30,770 USD) and 244,800 yuan (33,500 USD), making it a competitive option in the growing electric off-road segment.
