Colombo, July 16, 2025 – Bangladesh delivered a commanding performance on Wednesday to crush Sri Lanka by eight wickets in the third and final T20I at R. Premadasa Stadium, securing the T20I series 2-1.
The emphatic win marked a major triumph for Bangladesh, especially considering their previous struggles on Sri Lankan soil.
Sri Lanka batted first and posted a modest total of 132 for 7 in their allotted 20 overs. Bangladesh’s spinners, led by Mahedi Hasan, completely choked the run flow, with Hasan taking 4 wickets for just 11 runs in four overs. His exceptional spell earned him the Player of the Match award and was a crucial factor in dismantling Sri Lanka’s batting order.
In response, Bangladesh chased down the target comfortably, reaching 133 for 2 in just 16.3 overs. Tanzid Hasan played a match-winning knock, remaining unbeaten on 73. His partnerships with skipper Litton Das and then with Tawhid Hridoy ensured a smooth victory with no signs of a batting collapse. This clinical performance sealed the T20I series for Bangladesh, who bounced back brilliantly after losing the first match.
Litton Das, who was adjudged Player of the Series, made history by becoming the first Bangladeshi captain to win multiple bilateral T20I series away from home. Earlier, Bangladesh had whitewashed West Indies 3-0 in December 2024. This latest series victory under Das’s leadership is being hailed as a major milestone for Bangladesh cricket.
Speaking at the post-match presentation, Litton Das expressed his pride in leading the side and praised his teammates for believing in themselves even after a rocky start to the tour. “This win is very special for Bangladesh. We’ve struggled in Sri Lanka before, but this time we played quality cricket when it mattered most,” said Das.
The win caps off a long and mixed tour for Bangladesh, who now head home to host Pakistan in another three-match T20I series, starting July 20, 2025. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka will regroup and prepare for a five-match white-ball tour against Zimbabwe, including three T20Is beginning August 29.
The pitch in Colombo, which offered significant turn, suited Bangladesh’s strengths. Their spin attack thrived, making it feel like a home game in Dhaka. This well-rounded performance not only clinched the T20I series but also reaffirmed Bangladesh’s growing reputation in the shortest format.
