Bangladesh is set to reignite its ODI ambitions with a strengthened squad for the upcoming three-match series against Sri Lanka, starting in early July.
The Tigers have recalled several key players, including fast bowlers Taskin Ahmed and Mustafizur Rahman, along with top-order batter Litton Das, signaling a strategic push to regain form and momentum ahead of upcoming ICC tournaments.
Taskin Ahmed and Mustafizur Rahman, both vital components of Bangladesh’s pace arsenal, return after recovering from injuries. Their comeback is expected to enhance the team’s bowling depth and provide the much-needed edge against a competitive Sri Lankan lineup.
Chief selector Gazi Ashraf Hossain emphasized that including five pacers is a tactical decision, aimed at easing the workload on Taskin and Mustafizur while also ensuring sufficient backup.
Also returning is Litton Das, Bangladesh’s T20I captain and a key figure in the batting order. Das missed the recent ICC Champions Trophy but now has an opportunity to reclaim his ODI form.
According to the selectors, this is a timely chance for Das to sharpen his skills in the 50-over format before turning attention to the T20 World Cup. His inclusion is seen as part of a long-term plan to stabilize the batting lineup with experienced hands.
The 16-member squad combines experienced names with fresh faces. Young talents such as Shamim Hossain, Tanvir Islam, Hasan Mahmud, and Mohammad Naim have been added to inject energy and competition. Their presence is aimed at grooming the next generation while maintaining a balance with proven performers.
Veterans Mahmudullah and Mushfiqur Rahim, who featured in the Champions Trophy squad, have not been included. This omission suggests a strategic shift towards building a future-focused team, while still keeping the door open for experienced players based on performance and fitness.
The ODI series kicks off in Colombo, with matches slated for July 2 and July 5. The third and final ODI will be played in Pallekele on July 8. With both teams hungry for victory and fielding competitive squads, the series promises to deliver high-octane cricket action.
Fans can look forward to thrilling encounters as Bangladesh aims to make a strong statement on Sri Lankan soil.
