Galle, June 21, 2025 — The opening Test of the two-match series between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka concluded in a draw at the iconic Galle International Stadium, after five absorbing days of competitive cricket and emotional farewells.
While both teams displayed moments of brilliance, neither could force a result as time ran out on the final day.
Bangladesh set the tone from Day 1, recovering from a shaky start to post a commanding 292/3, courtesy of a 247-run partnership between Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mushfiqur Rahim. Shanto, under pressure to deliver, led from the front with a superb century, while Rahim continued his strong record against Sri Lanka with yet another hundred.
Day 2 saw Bangladesh continue their dominance but falter late in the innings, collapsing from 458/4 to 484/9. Litton Das fell agonizingly short of a century, while Sri Lanka’s bowlers, led by Asitha Fernando and Milan Rathnayake, capitalized on a sudden shift in pitch behavior.
Sri Lanka mounted a strong response on Day 3, anchored by Pathum Nissanka’s majestic 187. Supported by Chandimal and a farewell knock from Angelo Mathews, the hosts posted 485. Mathews, playing his final Test, received a guard of honour and emotional tributes. Though he couldn’t produce a big score, his retirement was the emotional highlight of the match. He finishes with over 8000 Test runs and remains one of Sri Lanka’s most decorated players.
Bangladesh pushed ahead again on Day 4 with valuable runs from Shadman Islam and another composed knock by Shanto. Declaring at 285/6, they set Sri Lanka a target of 296. Taijul Islam’s three quick wickets on Day 5 gave Bangladesh hope, but the hosts held firm at 72/4 as stumps were drawn.
Both captains agreed a result was improbable. Sri Lanka skipper Dhananjaya de Silva admitted to losing control in the first innings, while Bangladesh’s Shanto, named Player of the Match, praised his team’s preparation and discipline.
This draw means the series is still open heading into the second Test, with both Bangladesh and Sri Lanka looking to secure a decisive win. With high stakes and emotional undertones, the series promises more thrilling cricket ahead.
