Karachi, January 12, 2026 – The Bank of Punjab (BoP) on Monday dismissed reports of a cyberattack on its systems, while confirming that a temporary technical glitch led to unauthorized credit card transactions involving a limited number of its customers.
In an official statement submitted to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), the Bank said that the issue was detected during routine system monitoring, prompting an immediate internal investigation. The review concluded that certain irregular credit card transactions occurred due to a short-term system malfunction, which allowed some existing credit card holders to make unauthorized transactions beyond their approved limits.
The Bank clarified that the affected customers were not linked to any specific government initiative or scheme, including the Asaan Karobar Card, and that the issue impacted only a specific segment of BoP’s credit card users. It further emphasized that the incident was not the result of a cyberattack, nor was it connected to the system update carried out on January 2, 2026.
According to the statement, the identified system gap has now been fully rectified, and recovery measures have been initiated in line with the Bank’s standard operating procedures. BoP stated that most affected customers have already come forward and begun settling over-limit amounts, while additional remedial steps are being implemented to prevent recurrence.
The Bank also rejected media reports regarding the scale of financial exposure, calling such claims speculative, exaggerated, and inaccurate, and assured stakeholders that the situation remains fully manageable.
BoP confirmed that all impacted cardholders have been directly contacted and informed. Customers who have not been approached by the Bank are unaffected and need not be concerned. The Bank also urged customers to remain vigilant against fraudulent approaches and to engage only with authorized BoP officials after proper verification.
