South Africa has unveiled their 15-player squad for the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025, with Temba Bavuma set to captain the side. The Proteas are aiming to build on their recent impressive performances, including being runners-up in last year’s Men’s T20 World Cup and finalists in the upcoming World Test Championship.
The squad is strengthened by the return of pace stalwarts Anrich Nortje and Lungi Ngidi, who are expected to play crucial roles. Nortje’s inclusion is particularly noteworthy as this tournament marks his return to ODI cricket after a two-year absence. He had been sidelined with a stress fracture in his back, which caused him to miss both the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 and South Africa’s home season. Despite his challenges, Nortje has continued to excel in the T20 format, consistently delivering standout performances.
Lungi Ngidi also makes his return to the squad after recovering from a groin injury that kept him out of action since October 2024. Both bowlers bring a formidable edge to South Africa’s pace attack, enhancing their chances in the high-stakes tournament.
South Africa has opted to retain much of the core group that propelled them to the semi-finals of the 2023 Men’s Cricket World Cup. Ten players from that squad have been included, reflecting the team’s continuity and confidence in its core lineup. New faces such as Tony de Zorzi, Ryan Rickelton, Tristan Stubbs, and Wiaan Mulder are set to make their debut in a 50-over ICC event, adding fresh energy and depth to the squad.
Head coach Rob Walter emphasized the blend of experience and fresh talent, stating: “This squad boasts a wealth of experience, with many players having consistently performed in high-pressure situations. That kind of experience is invaluable in a tournament like this. We’ve retained our core group while introducing promising new talent. Our recent performances at ICC events have shown our ability to compete at the highest level, and we’re determined to go even further in our quest for silverware.”
