BIPARJOY Strengthens in East-central Arabian Sea, Expected to Impact Southern Sindh

Karachi, June 11, 2023 – The Very Severe Cyclonic Storm (VSCS) named “BIPARJOY” has intensified over the east-central Arabian Sea and is currently moving in a north-northeastward direction.

According to meteorological experts, the cyclone has maintained its strength and is expected to become an Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm (ESCS) within the next 24 hours. As of the latest update, the cyclone is positioned near Latitude 17.3°N and Longitude 67.4°E, approximately 840 kilometers south of Karachi, 830 kilometers south of Thatta, and 930 kilometers southeast of Ormara.

The cyclone’s maximum sustained surface winds are currently recorded at 130-140 km/hour, with gusts reaching up to 150 km/hour near the system center. Sea conditions are described as phenomenal, with the maximum wave height measuring between 25-28 feet. The favorable environmental conditions, including a sea surface temperature of 30-32°C, low vertical wind shear, and upper-level divergence, are expected to contribute to the further intensification of the cyclone.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department’s cyclone warning center in Karachi is closely monitoring the system and will issue updates accordingly. The projected path suggests that the VSCS “BIPARJOY” will continue its north-northeast trajectory, heading towards the Southeast Sindh-Indian Gujarat coast.

Anticipated Impacts:

The approaching cyclone is expected to bring significant rainfall, thunderstorms, and heavy precipitation to the southern and southeastern districts of Sindh, including Karachi, Thatta, Sujawal, Badin, Tharparker, and Mirpurkhas. The inclement weather conditions are likely to begin from the evening or night of 13 June.

Accompanying the rain, squally winds with intensities ranging between 60-80 km/hour are anticipated. These strong winds have the potential to cause damage to vulnerable structures, particularly kutcha houses.

Moreover, the cyclone could trigger a storm surge along the coastal areas, with a possible elevation of 3 meters (8-10 feet) above normal sea level. Residents in low-lying areas are advised to take necessary precautions and remain vigilant during this period.

In light of the expected adverse conditions, fishermen are strongly advised to refrain from venturing into the open sea starting from 11 June 2023, until the system has passed. The Arabian Sea conditions are expected to become rough with high tides along the coast, posing risks to maritime activities.

Residents and authorities in the potentially affected areas are urged to stay updated with the latest weather bulletins and follow the instructions issued by local authorities and disaster management agencies.
