Blistering heatwave set to scorch Pakistan during Eid holidays

Hot and Humid Weather

Islamabad, June 5, 2025 – In a dramatic weather turn, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has sounded a severe heatwave alert across the nation, warning that this year’s Eid-ul-Adha holidays could be the hottest in recent memory.

As millions prepare to celebrate Eid, scorching temperatures threaten to disrupt festivities and pose serious health risks.

According to the PMD, a powerful high-pressure system is set to build over Pakistan from June 7, gripping most regions starting June 8. This meteorological phenomenon is expected to unleash an intense heatwave right through the Eid holidays, spanning June 7 to June 12.

In the upper half of the country—central and upper Punjab, Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan—daytime temperatures are forecasted to soar 5 to 7°C above normal. The southern regions, including upper and central Sindh, southern Punjab, and parts of Balochistan, will not be spared either, with expected temperature surges of 4 to 6°C above seasonal averages.

The PMD also warns of possible dust storms and gusty winds sweeping across the plains, triggered by extreme surface heating. These volatile weather conditions could compound the already dangerous heatwave gripping the country during Eid.

Possible Impacts & Urgent Precautions:

• Citizens are strongly advised to avoid unnecessary outdoor exposure during peak daylight hours throughout the Eid period.

• Vulnerable groups, particularly children, the old-age, and women, are urged to stay indoors and remain hydrated.

• Authorities highlight that rising temperatures in the northern areas may accelerate snowmelt, potentially impacting downstream water flow.

• The PMD has appealed to the public to conserve water and use it judiciously, especially during Eid-related activities.

Farmers are also advised to reschedule agricultural operations, as the heatwave may affect crop and livestock health.

This Eid-ul-Adha, traditionally a time for outdoor gatherings and livestock sacrifice, may now require a rethink of celebrations under the blazing sun. With the heatwave expected to persist throughout the Eid break, all provincial and district authorities have been instructed to stay on high alert and implement emergency measures where necessary.

As Pakistan braces for one of the hottest Eid holidays in recent years, citizens are reminded: stay safe, stay cool, and stay informed.
