Arsenal winger reflects on England’s painful World Cup exit as the Three Lions prepare for a new Nations League campaign.
Bukayo Saka has admitted that England still carry emotional scars from their painful FIFA World Cup semi-final defeat against Argentina. The Arsenal winger said the disappointment remains difficult to completely leave behind as the national team begins another international campaign.
England will open their Nations League campaign against reigning world champions Spain at Wembley on September 26. The fixture comes only nine weeks after their dramatic 2-1 defeat to Argentina in Atlanta, where England surrendered a late lead after appearing on course for victory.
England Looking to Move Forward
Saka acknowledged that expectations surrounding England were exceptionally high during the World Cup, with players and supporters believing the team could finally end the long wait for a major men’s international trophy.
England’s last major men’s title came at the 1966 World Cup on home soil. Despite the disappointment in Atlanta, Saka said the squad is now attempting to concentrate on the challenges ahead rather than remain focused on the semi-final setback.
The winger also impressed during England’s campaign, scoring a hat-trick in a 6-4 victory over France in the third-place play-off.
Saka’s Injury Limited His Role
Saka was managing an Achilles injury throughout the tournament and remained among the substitutes during the semi-final against Argentina. Manager Thomas Tuchel chose defensive replacements as England attempted to protect their advantage, but Argentina’s late comeback changed the outcome.
Tuchel subsequently faced criticism over his tactical decisions, particularly his approach after England moved ahead in the contest.
Tuchel Focuses on Future
Tuchel has acknowledged that the coaching staff have conducted critical reviews of the World Cup campaign behind closed doors. The England manager said self-reflection and experience would be important as he attempts to improve the team.
England’s immediate priority is the Nations League, with four group matches standing between them and qualification. Beyond that, Tuchel is building toward Euro 2028, which will be jointly hosted by England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland.
