In a bold leap forward for sustainable transport in Europe, Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) giant BYD has officially broken ground on a major expansion of its electric bus and truck plant in northern Hungary.

The ceremony on Friday marked the beginning of a new chapter in BYD’s European journey, as the company cements its position at the forefront of electric mobility on the continent.

The centerpiece of this expansion is a sprawling 29,000-square-meter production facility, set to create over 600 jobs in the region. Once operational, the state-of-the-art plant will triple BYD’s current output, with an annual capacity to manufacture more than 1,000 electric buses and trucks. This scale-up comes at a time when demand for eco-friendly, zero-emission transport solutions is surging across Europe.

Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Péter Szijjártó, lauded the development, calling BYD “a dynamically expanding company” and declaring that “Hungary has boarded an express train that many in Europe are still trying to catch.” His remarks underscored the strategic significance of the investment not only for Hungary but for the entire European electric vehicle (EV) industry.

The upgraded Komárom facility will also house a cutting-edge research and development lab, enhancing Hungary’s standing as a critical hub for electric vehicle innovation. This move is part of BYD’s broader European strategy, which includes the construction of its first passenger electric car plant in Szeged and the establishment of its European headquarters and R&D center in Budapest.

Local leaders have hailed the transformation of Komárom, with State Secretary Judit Bertalan Czunyiné highlighting the town’s rise as a leading industrial city. Chinese Ambassador Gong Tao called the project a “symbol of deepening China-Hungary ties” and a powerful engine for economic growth and innovation.

BYD Europe’s Managing Director Zhang Daochun stated, “This expansion is not just about production. It’s about building a greener and smarter Europe.” With over 590 million km already driven by BYD’s electric buses in Europe, eliminating more than 630,000 tons of CO₂ emissions, the company is driving change—one electric mile at a time.
