BYD Racco makes global debut outside Japan with $34,615 price

The compact electric kei car expands beyond Japan with a 320km driving range, two LFP battery options and seating for four passengers.

BYD has introduced its compact Racco electric car in Sri Lanka, marking the model’s first market entry outside Japan. The small electric vehicle is available at an introductory price of 11,450,000 Sri Lankan rupees, equivalent to approximately $34,615.

The introductory offer is scheduled to remain valid until November 9, 2026. According to BYD’s local representatives, the price may increase after the promotional period ends. Macau is also expected to receive the electric kei car as the automaker expands its presence in additional right-hand-drive markets.

Price Difference Between Japan and Sri Lanka

The Sri Lankan price is considerably higher than the vehicle’s cost in its original market. When the Racco debuted in Japan in July 2026, its prices ranged from 2,140,000 yen to 2,497,000 yen, equivalent to approximately $13,555 to $15,815.

The difference reflects the additional costs associated with importing vehicles into Sri Lanka, where taxes and import duties can substantially increase retail prices. For comparison, the petrol-powered Toyota Yaris Cross is priced at approximately 19,950,000 Sri Lankan rupees, or $60,315, in the country.

The Racco has already attracted attention in Japan, reportedly receiving more than 1,000 orders within two weeks of its launch.

Battery Options and Driving Range

The BYD Racco features a box-shaped exterior designed around the compact dimensions of Japan’s kei car category. It measures 3,395mm in length, 1,475mm in width and 1,800mm in height, with a 2,520mm wheelbase.

The front-wheel-drive electric vehicle is powered by a motor producing 47kW, or approximately 63 horsepower, and 160Nm of torque. Buyers can choose between two lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery packs with capacities of 22.4kWh and 35.84kWh.

Depending on the selected battery, the Racco delivers a claimed driving range of 210km to 320km. The maximum figure is based on Japan’s WLTC testing cycle.

Compact Design for Urban Mobility

Inside, the Racco accommodates four occupants and offers 280 litres of luggage capacity. Its minimum turning radius of 4.8 metres is intended to make manoeuvring through narrow streets and crowded urban areas easier.

With its compact footprint, electric powertrain and multiple battery configurations, the BYD Racco adds another option to the growing small-EV segment as the company extends the model beyond its home market.
