BYD, the world-renowned new energy vehicle (NEV) giant, is gearing up to make a bold entry into China’s competitive pickup truck segment with an all-new model.
Recent spy shots confirm the vehicle’s testing phase, with an official launch anticipated in the latter half of the year. While the new model showcases a unique design distinct from its global sibling—the BYD Shark 6—it is expected to share the same DMO (Dual Mode Off-road) platform, known for blending rugged capability with cutting-edge hybrid efficiency.
New Energy Meets Utility: BYD’s Domestic Pickup Strategy
The upcoming pickup appears to incorporate BYD’s distinctive Dynasty design language, highlighting the brand’s focus on aesthetics and innovation.
This venture into the domestic pickup space marks a significant diversification of BYD’s product portfolio, aiming to capture a growing segment of utility vehicle buyers in China.
Speculation also suggests the use of a monocoque chassis, similar to BYD’s Song Plus or Seal U, which could deliver SUV-like comfort alongside traditional pickup toughness.
Built on Proven Technology: Insights from the Shark 6
Though not officially confirmed, the new pickup’s architecture is widely believed to mirror that of the BYD Shark 6—an international model that has already proven its worth in markets like South America and Southeast Asia.
From January to April 2025, the Shark 6 recorded strong global sales, nearing 20,000 units. This successful track record sets high expectations for BYD’s domestic launch.
Power, Range, and Off-Road Capability
Performance-wise, the Shark 6’s plug-in hybrid system offers robust specs: 0-100 km/h in just 5.7 seconds, a 100 km electric-only range, and hybrid fuel efficiency at 7.5L/100km.
With a combined driving range of 840 km, this model addresses range anxiety head-on. Structurally, it features a non-load-bearing frame, double-wishbone independent suspension, electric AWD, and a central locking differential—ensuring it’s ready for diverse terrains.
Affordable Pricing and Smarter Features
Expected to be priced between 200,000 and 250,000 yuan ($27,760–$34,700), the domestic version undercuts the Shark 6’s international price of $55,500.
In addition, the Chinese variant may include advanced driver-assistance systems and enhanced tech features, catering to the country’s demand for smart vehicles.
A Game Changer in the Making
BYD’s entry into China’s domestic pickup market could disrupt established players like Great Wall Motors and Changan. As interest in electrified utility vehicles surges, all eyes are on BYD’s new model to potentially redefine the future of sustainable pickups in China.
