Karachi, July 8, 2024 – The Council of Economic and Energy Journalists (CEEJ) has erupted in condemnation following a reported assault on ARY News reporter Afzal Khan by security personnel at the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) on Monday.
The incident occurred as journalists gathered to cover a fire that halted trading activity at the exchange.
According to reports, Khan, along with colleagues from other news outlets, arrived at the PSX to report on the unfolding situation. However, while carrying out his journalistic duties, Khan was allegedly mistreated and assaulted by PSX security personnel. The incident reportedly escalated to the point where Khan’s mobile phones were confiscated, hindering his ability to deliver timely updates on this significant event.
The CEEJ responded swiftly, with members lodging a formal written complaint with the Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP), the Commissioner of Market Securities Division, the Chairperson of the Pakistan Stock Exchange, and the Managing Director of the Pakistan Stock Exchange. The council’s complaint demands swift and decisive action against the individuals involved in the alleged assault.
“This incident is a blatant violation of press freedom and a serious impediment to journalists fulfilling their crucial role of informing the public,” declared Raja Kamran, President CEEJ. “We urge the PSX administration and the relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and hold those responsible accountable for their actions,” he added.
The CEEJ’s stance underscores the importance of ensuring a safe and enabling environment for journalists to operate freely. Their ability to report on critical events, such as the fire at the PSX, plays a vital role in keeping the public informed and fostering transparency within the financial sector.
This developing story is likely to be monitored closely by journalists and media organizations across Pakistan. It remains to be seen how the PSX administration and the SECP will respond to the CEEJ’s demands and whether an official investigation will be launched.
