Islamabad, December 19, 2025 – Federal Minister for Commerce, Jam Kamal Khan, held a high-level consultative meeting with leaders, traders, and community representatives from Chaman District, including members of the Chaman Chamber of Commerce & Industry, to discuss challenges related to cross-border trade with Afghanistan.

The discussions focused on the frequent and prolonged closures of the Pak–Afghan border at Chaman, which have caused severe socio-economic consequences. Traders highlighted financial losses, disruptions in the export of perishable goods, rising unemployment, and difficulties faced by the local population that depends heavily on border trade for their livelihoods.

Minister Jam Kamal Khan acknowledged the concerns raised and assured stakeholders of the Ministry of Commerce’s full support in addressing trade-related issues and promoting legitimate commerce. He emphasized that the challenges faced by Chaman’s trading community remain a government priority.

While stressing the Ministry’s role in advocating for smoother border trade facilitation, the Minister clarified that the decision to open or close the border is determined collectively by the government, taking into account broader national security and policy considerations.

Mr. Jam Kamal Khan confirmed that the issues raised during the meeting would be escalated to relevant national authorities and discussed in bilateral forums to seek sustainable, predictable, and transparent solutions. The goal is to balance security needs with the promotion of lawful trade and economic activity in the border region.

The Federal Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to resolving border trade challenges and supporting Chaman’s business community, ensuring economic stability and helping local residents sustain their livelihoods amid ongoing cross-border trade disruptions.
