ISLAMABAD: The government has announced the eligibility criteria and registration procedure for its Rs100 per litre petrol relief scheme, providing financial support to motorcyclists, rickshaw and Chingchi users, and owners of small vehicles amid rising fuel prices.
Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif announced the special relief package on Sunday as international oil prices continued to rise amid heightened tensions in the Middle East.
Petrol is currently priced at Rs375.82 per litre, following an increase of Rs5.02, while high-speed diesel (HSD) costs Rs403.32 per litre after a Rs5.28 increase.
Who is eligible for Rs100 petrol relief?
The scheme covers motorcycles, rickshaws, Chingchis and other two- and three-wheeled vehicles, as well as vehicles with an engine capacity of up to 800cc.
Motorcycles, rickshaws and two- and three-wheelers
Eligible owners and users of motorcycles, rickshaws, Chingchis and other qualifying two- and three-wheelers will receive Rs100 per litre relief on up to 20 litres of petrol per month.
This translates into maximum monthly support of Rs2,000 for eligible users.
Vehicles up to 800cc
Owners and users of vehicles with an engine capacity of up to 800cc will receive Rs100 per litre relief on up to 30 litres of petrol per month.
Eligible owners can therefore receive maximum monthly support of Rs3,000.
How to register for the petrol subsidy
The Ministry of IT and Telecommunication has issued the registration procedure for citizens seeking to benefit from the scheme.
Eligible citizens must send an SMS containing “REG” followed by their CNIC number to 9771.
The registration message must also include the vehicle number, provincial code and registration date, according to the ministry.
Registration has opened with immediate effect. The government will also launch an awareness campaign to inform citizens about the registration process and eligibility requirements.
How to obtain the petrol relief token
After successfully completing registration, eligible citizens can obtain a fuel token by sending “TOK” to 9771.
The fuel token can then be presented at participating petrol stations to purchase petrol at the subsidised rate.
When will the Rs100 petrol relief start?
The Rs100 per litre petrol relief scheme will be implemented in phases.
In Islamabad, the scheme will take effect from the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday.
Across the rest of Pakistan, including Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, the relief will become available from the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday.
The scheme is aimed at reducing the impact of higher petrol prices on households and small vehicle users as the government responds to increased volatility in global oil markets.
