Veteran England striker joins Chelsea as Xabi Alonso looks to add experience and leadership ahead of the new Premier League season.
Chelsea have completed the signing of experienced striker Danny Welbeck from Brighton & Hove Albion in a deal reportedly worth £5 million, marking one of the club’s most unexpected transfer moves of the summer.
The 35-year-old England international has signed a two-year contract and is expected to join Xabi Alonso’s squad during their ongoing pre-season preparations.
The transfer represents a notable shift in Chelsea’s recent recruitment strategy, which has largely focused on acquiring young talents with long-term development potential.
Welbeck becomes one of the oldest players signed by the club in recent years and the first player over the age of 26 for whom Chelsea have paid a transfer fee since Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang arrived from Barcelona in 2022.

Welbeck arrives after enjoying one of the most productive periods of his career with Brighton, scoring 13 goals in 37 league appearances last season following a 10-goal campaign in 2024-25.
His arrival could create increased competition for places among Chelsea’s attacking options, including Liam Delap, Nicolas Jackson and Marc Guiu.
The move also continues the growing transfer connection between Chelsea and Brighton, following previous deals involving Joao Pedro, Moises Caicedo, Robert Sanchez and Marc Cucurella.
Welbeck leaves Brighton after six successful years at the club. Since joining from Watford in 2020, he scored 51 goals and registered 18 assists, becoming the Seagulls’ all-time leading scorer in the English top flight.
Brighton chairman Tony Bloom praised Welbeck’s impact, describing him as a key figure whose performances, leadership and professionalism helped shape some of the club’s most memorable achievements in recent years.
